the people back home in just about every district keep asking us why it is that we can't get anything done here. well, i'm a newcomer. i've only been here about five months, and i know what is going on in terms of the political gamesmanship. this is an issue on which political games have to stop. we should have members of the republican caucus standing with us today and i hope in time we will. this has to be a bipartisan issue in the end. and so, as i have looked at what happened over the last two years, over 20 mass shootings and vitually every one of them has two things in common. the killer, the shooter used high capacity magazines and/or assault weapons to kill he is victims. and the second is almost every one of those individuals was either later or previously diagnosed with a serious mental illness that had been untreated. now i will quickly note that 95% of people with mental illness never commit a violent act. in fact, they are more likely to be victims themselves. but for that small number who might be prone to violence, we have to do something to increase awareness and treatment.

holiday. >>> thank you, suzanne. i'm victor blackwell in for brooke baldwin. thank you for being with us today. the president is pulling the plug on his trip to hawaii to tend to urgent matters in washington. with tax hikes looming in less than a week, he's scheduled to return to the white house tomorrow, just as a deadlocked congress reconvenes days ahead of the so-called fiscal cliff. you're just six days from feeling this. now, first hit is coming on january 1st when your take home pay will drop by 2% because of a scheduled hike in the social security payroll tax. that's just the start. income taxes are set to climb too. and you'll notice that when employer gets to around the adjusted withholding, the government spending cuts, those are also scheduled for january 1st and bound to slow the economy and some argue they'll weaken the military. congress has seen this coming, but an effort to limit the damage failed last week. republican house speaker john boehner could not persuade enough members of his party to let tax rates rise on incomes over a million dollars while sparing everyone el

should go up for the wealthiest individuals, all of us, every single one of us, agrees that tax rates should not go up for the other 98% of americans, which includes 97% of small businesses. every member of congress believes that. every democrat. every republican. so there is absolutely no reason not to protect these americans from a tax hike. but the very least, let us agree right now on what we already agree on. let us get that done. i just spoke to speaker boehner and met with senator reid. i have asked congress to work on a package that prevents a tax hike on middle-class americans, protect unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on growth and deficit reduction. that is an achievable goal. that can get done in 10 days. once this legislation is agreed to, i expect democrats and republicans to get back to washington and have it passed both chambers. i will immediately signed it into law before january 1 of next year. averting this tax hike is not a democratic or republican responsibility. with their votes, the american people have det

unity, saw it in newtown myself this week. i want to go to my colleague poppy harlow is there for us live amidst the memorial that i know poppy is growing and growing. we saw the bells. we saw the services this morning. but just take me to newtown. what was it like there at 9:30 this morning? >> reporter: it was silent, brooke. it was still. i'm so glad you played that whole song because as we listen to that from our location and people in this town stood here at this memorial, which has grown into blocks and blocks, they all stopped and they stopped for five to ten minutes to remember those 28 lives that were lost as each bell chimed. it was a moment i'll never forget. it was a moment when the president took time also in the white house to commemorate the moment with a moment of silence of his own. people across this country, across the world, 28 governors asked people in their states to also commemorate that moment. so i think it was the one point when the entire country stood still behind the people of newtown. you know, people here woke up this morning, brooke, to a letter from t

in a couple of minutes. we want to get your calls and what is ahead in gun-control. roy is joining us from north carolina, the independent line, good morning. caller: it could be a bitter fight but i think some drastic action needs to be taken. it should be at least as burdensome for the gun owner as it is for a car owner. registration, insurance, testing, everything -- handguns are a big problem, too. i think it is so bad that the president should do some kind of executive order and put a moratorium on military rifles, at least, because around here in western north carolina, there are gun shops and people waiting for four hours to get to this ar-15. they say they will not take it out of the box, the majority of them. they will either have it as an investment or have it grandfathered in. this is like undetectable poison. 300 million guns that have proliferated the whole country. we have plenty of guns and a source needs to be stopped and drastic measures need to be taken. i hope it is not bitter. host: thanks for the call. from facebook -- from twitter -- dale is joining us on the democrat
